Need a Vacation to Make Up for a Year of Lost Memories

We all have a story… our family story starts with the end of my active duty Army commitment. My wife and I wanted a life we could control. With the birth of our son we were happily enjoying life until that fateful day arrived and our lives were put on hold.

 I was completing my military service obligation in the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR). The IRR is a pool of trained military personnel not actively serving, but standing by if our country needed our service. My commitment ends in April of 2010. I have been on deployment since February 2009. I missed my son’s first birthday, first steps, first tooth and the list of firsts goes on.

 My wife has been keeping the family running since I have been away. I know she has the tougher job. She balances a full time workload with being an excellent mother and taking care of all our household needs. She deserves a relaxing get away while I want time to reconnect with our son.

 Being away from family makes you realize that time together is the most precious part of life. A dream vacation will make up for all those firsts I missed with our son and give us an opportunity to create life long memories.

The letter was dropped off at the door of our home in August 2008. My wife called me immediately frantic, “The Army is calling you back to active duty for deployment to IRAQ ”. We were both dumbstruck. I completed my active duty commitment of 4 years. Of that 4 years 15 months were spent deployed to IRAQ . Here I am again, a slightly different mission, but this time away from my wife and 1 year old son for 12 months.  We need a dream vacation to make up for lost time!
