I am a vacation rental owner who recently published a book called the Vacation Rental Goldmine to help other owners create great experiences for their guests. I am very excited to kick off my HomeAway blog series with the unique Whole Vacation my family and I shared in London and Paris over Spring Break. These vacation homes and owners created one of a kind experiences for us.
We are a family of four with two girls, ages 13 and 11. We were looking for accommodations so we could all stay together and “live as the locals do.” We really wanted to see and experience these cities 24/7 to get the most from our vacation time. After searching to find the best combination of location, price, and amenities, we narrowed down to a few properties., Using traveler reviews for our final decisions, we could see how the places met and exceeded the needs of other similarly sized families.
London – The Black & White House
Off to London’s Black & White House a beautiful three story flat in Camden. Carol-anne Turner rents the top two floors of this Camden flat given to her by her grandfather.
Carol-anne lives on the ground floor and has fully updated the decor with unique art and musical stars. The hallways feature amazing light fixtures and hanging decorations (see picture). Once inside the flat, the British mirror, rug, and pillows really make you feel a part of the London scene.
Carol-anne thought of everything for us; from the car she arranged to pick us up from the airport to the thoughtful stocking of the refrigerator and cupboards. She even left Easter candy for our daughters.
Our gracious host recounts her start with Vacation Rentals four years ago as the beginning of a procession of the “most lovely people who have come to stay, many of whom are still friends”. It’s clear that she and her property manager work hard to create this unique experience for guests. Carol-anne has developed friendships with many of her guests and has shared quite a few hugs on her front porch as they depart.
Paris – Abelard Apartment
From London, we departed by train to Paris and the Abelard Apartment on Rue de Galande, just steps from Notre Dame Cathedral. Meet Thierry, the owner of the apartments in this building.
After Thierry and his business partners purchased the building, they completely renovated and decorated the building in period style. Between the two buildings he and his business partners own as Parisbestlodge, they spent almost a million dollars on the renovations. From the backlit stained glass above the fireplace to the antique wooden closets lining the hall, the results are stunning. We threw open the windows of Abelard to soak up the view of Notre Dame while enjoying the sounds and delicious smells of the Paris alleyways below. This is Paris at its best!
After the fun-filled vacation moments over the nine days, our daughters were ready to vote us parents of the year. These two properties and owners gave us family memories we will never forget.
