Here at HomeAway, research plays an important part in helping us understand what factors travelers consider important when planning and booking vacation accommodations. That's exactly why we put together our first-ever trend report that outlines some big vacation trends you can expect to see in 2017.
First up, destinations. The report points out that while Hawaii and Florida remain the top picks for travelers, there is growing demand for smaller destinations like Hurricane, Utah and Waco, Texas. So why are these destinations becoming so popular? It may be because they are close to some major attractions, like Grand Canyon National Park, in Hurricane's case. For Waco, we suspect it may have something to do with HGTV's hit tv show "Fixer Upper", which is based in the small Texas town. A few homes that the show's stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have remodeled for the cameras have even found their way onto HomeAway.com (see above listing).
Another key find from the report? Very few travelers - or a mere 11% - actually enjoy sharing accommodations while vacationing. While many think that millennials are quite open to couch-crashing or sharing an apartment with a host, this is actually not the case. The majority of millennials prefer to not share, with 33% stating they would "never" and 27% indicating they would, but only as a last resort.
Another important find highlights that people are beginning to travel farther - and longer - than before. While the majority of Americans choose to travel by car to their destinations, they are also deciding to drive a few extra miles and stay a few more days. This may be due to the low cost of gas - saving an extra $50 to $100 at the pump may convince travelers to book that extra night.
