Team HomeAway is never one to back down from a competition, so when we were invited to join the Startup Games: Level Up challenge, we of course said, "YES!" And when we learned that we would be playing for the charity of our choice (in our case that was Austin Habitat for Humanity)... well, that was just icing on the cake!
Launched in 2012, the Startup Games were formed to give Austin-area startup companies the chance to mix and mingle with one another while helping the community. The event was a huge hit, but as the years have gone on, some of the founding companies have outgrown their "startup" label. So this year, the event coordinators opted to launch the inaugural "Level Up Games," geared towards mid-sized companies.
The morning of the event, our team, which was a mix of 40+ employees from across the company, was amped up and ready to play in a variety of games ranging from Flip Cup and Beer Pong to dodgeball and Mario Kart. HomeAway HR Generalist, Andrea Smith, was even called upon to kick off the entire event by singing the National Anthem - which she sang flawlessly, I might add.
The Level Up Games is just the right mix of underground rave and fun-loving frat party, and the fierce competition kept the athletes and spectators engaged for nearly 8 hours - or maybe that was the free Titos vodka!
While we certainly didn't sweep the competition, we came away with a few medals and had an incredible time! And we managed to raise a good chunk of change for our friends at Austin Habitat for Humanity.
Time to start practicing for next year...
