HomeAway and FamilyFun magazine teamed up for a somewhat non-traditional survey to find out just how influential kids are in the travel planning for summer vacations. The 2017 Kidpinion Travel Survey tells us that the kids are the shot-callers in the family when school lets out and the summer fun begins!
We asked hundreds of parents and children from across the country about their family vacation planning and habits: the survey showed that 87 percent of parents in the US said that their kids play a role in vacation planning and 13 percent said that their kids actually make the final decision. Among these key findings were four major trends:
It’s All About the Experience
It might be time to say goodbye to those long, detailed birthday-wish lists that come around every year. The survey showed that kids value experiences more than material items. Almost half of the kid respondents said they would prefer to go on vacation for their next birthday rather than receive a physical gift. The kids also revealed that seeing a new place or trying new things is their favorite part of a vacation.
Monkey See Monkey Do
We found that peer pressure has a heavy influence on young ones…but in a good way! Children’s vacation choices are influenced by their surroundings, with friends as the number one influence, followed by celebrities, Instagram, TV and movies.
Apples Don’t Fall Far from the (Family) Tree
You may have more in common with your kid than you think. The survey tells us that kids and parents share the same vision for their vacation. Since fitting everyone comfortably in one place is a priority for traveling families, we found that the same percentage of parents and children would choose to stay at a vacation renal over other accommodations. In fact, kids ranked having their own room as their second priority in vacation stay amenities. Additionally, both parents and kids had the same choices for three unique places to stay: a private island, castle and treehouse.
The More the Merrier
Looks like it’s time to start planning the big family reunion. The final conclusion we drew from the survey was that kids are very inclusive with whom they want to vacation with. Their ideal vacation would include friends, grandparents, cousins and even a pet! Luckily, HomeAway has thousands of listings that accommodate large parties perfect for family reunions, and Fido!
