Going to the summer games is a once-in-a-lifetime trip for most people. And as we head into the 28th edition of the games, taking place this summer in Brazil, perhaps going to the games has never been more accessible (Thank you, modern-day travel advancements). However, attending is easier said then done, especially when you consider that it’s one of the most expensive events to travel for. While airfares are at a premium, hotel rates are even more so. Hotels that aren’t sold out already often have rooms that are several times the typical rate.
But that’s where HomeAway comes in. HomeAway vacation rentals are among the most budget-friendly accommodation options. A standard hotel room typically equals the cost of a two- to three-bedroom vacation rental (averaging only $220/night). That’s even more so during major holidays and events, when hotel prices are more expensive than normal. So with more than 1,000 vacation rentals still available in Brazil on HomeAway.com for August, we wanted to share more about some of the most popular areas to stay in Brazil.
Many of Rio de Janeiro's most popular neighborhoods, such as Copacabana, are where HomeAway has some of the most vacation rentals that are still available in August. Copacabana alone had several hundred vacation homes that were still available at the publication of this. Elsewhere, Barra da Tijuca (Barra), which is hosting the largest number of competitions, still has several hundred vacation rentals available, too. Below you’ll find more info on these, and a few of our top Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods, to help you plan your 2016 summer games trip with HomeAway.
Copacabana isn’t just one of the most popular beach neighborhoods in Brazil, but one of the most popular beach neighborhoods in the entire world. It annually plays host to one of the largest New Year’s Eve parties in the world, and most recently was home to the FIFA Fan Fest for the World Cup. Since Copacabana is such a world-renowned vacation spot, it’s also home to some of HomeAway’s highest concentration of vacation rentals in Rio. Many of HomeAway’s vacation homes in Copacabana feature beach views, though if you want more bang for your buck, you can stay a number of blocks off the main thoroughfare but still be within close proximity of the beach. Some of the competitions taking place in and around Copacabana include the swimming and cycling sections of the triathlons, beach volleyball, and sailing.
Affluence and social life converge in Ipanema, considered one of the sexiest beach destinations in the world. While there isn’t games present in Ipanema as you have in some of the other neighborhoods, like Copacabana and Barra, you get some style and elegance that you don’t find in many of the other neighborhoods. And that’s reflected in many of HomeAway’s vacation rentals in Ipanema, where you’ll find a number of penthouse vacation homes, as well as other upscale properties. Even still, it’s convenient to many of Rio’s Olympic venues, bordering Copacabana to the north, and with Barra to the west.
Barra da Tijuca
Barra da Tijuca, most commonly referred to as Barra, may be one of the newest Rio de Janeiro neighborhoods, but it’ll actually be the heartbeat of the competitions, featuring Olympic Park and the largest concentration of events. Barra is the best of all worlds, with its miles of sandy beaches, the 700-store Barra Shopping Mall, and convenience to nearby neighborhoods like Recreio, where several different Olympic events will also be taking place. Additionally, it has one of the largest concentrations of HomeAway vacation rentals still available in Rio, including a number of which are oceanfront or have ocean views. Barra also offers some of the best beach bang for your bucket, as compared to Ipanema and Copacabana.
Continuing with the beach neighborhood theme is Recreio Beach, another one of Rio de Janeiro’s newest neighborhoods, but without the hustle and bustle of many of the area’s most popular beaches. If you want something a little bit more laid back, then this is your beach, as Recreio is largely devoid of the high rises you see in the other beach neighborhoods. Yet it’s still convenient, as it borders Barra, with Ipanema and Copacabana just beyond it. Many of HomeAway’s vacation rentals in Recreio are more residental, often having much more space, and sometimes with added perks like your own pool and outdoor space.
Located north of the rest of the neighborhoods we’ve discussed, Maracana is less beach and more urban. If you plan on attending the opening or closing ceremonies, then this is where you want to be, as you’ll find them happening at Maracanã Stadium, which will also be the venue for some of the soccer matches. Also nearby is Sambódromo, which will be hosting the archery and marathon events. As of the publishing of this article, there were still a number of apartments available in and around Maracana.
