On Friday, January 23, HomeAway welcomed distinguished computer scientist and pioneer of object-oriented software design Dr. Ralph Johnson to our new Domain office in Austin, TX. Dr. Johnson co-authored the seminal book Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, which has sold over 500,000 copies in English and in 13 other languages.
Over the course of a day, Dr. Johnson provided a series of workshops to our development organization on topics including domain-driven design, mistakes in design patterns, and framework design. Our engineering team was eager to soak up as much information as they could from the presentation and also participated in a number of ad-hoc small group discussions between the formal sessions. The sessions provided some fascinating historical context for those of us who were already very familiar with his work, and a solid overview for folks who were relatively new to the concept of Design Patterns. The authors are gearing up for a revised edition of the book, and so we got a sneak-peek at the topics that will be included there.
We want to thank Dr. Johnson for spending a day with HomeAway Engineering, and we look forward to putting the knowledge we gained to use at the Birdhouse!
