Twice a year, we encourage employees to tap their creativity for a three-day hackathon we call "HackAway." Many of the ideas brought to the table are intended to solve a business need and some will even find a place on the product roadmap.
We asked HomeAway Software Engineer David Sumera to give us a run-down on what the hack event is all about...
HackAway is a three-day competition open to all of our global employees, aimed at improving HomeAway - be it our product, development process, customer service, or even our culture. Currently held twice a year, employees are encouraged to meet beforehand to discuss and incubate ideas that may not be on the roadmap, but would be of great service if implemented.
Hackers work throughout the weekend, often putting in more than 10 hours each day to move from idea to product as quickly as possible. The judging happens only a few days later in front of a small gathering of HomeAway executives, directors, and managers. Notable projects are all over the place, ranging from efficient technology enhancements to Customer Service tools to brand new products, and even the occasional Easter egg on the website. Many projects eventually make it through to production – the ultimate reward for a weekend of innovation!
