Just a few weeks ago I wrote about what the top-ten most popular spring destinations among HomeAway users were. And the results were both surprising and not surprising at all. What wasn’t surprising was that nearly the entire list was made up of beach destinations, a number of which were in Florida. However, most surprising was that the num. one destination wasn’t a beach destination at all, but rather The Villages, in Central Florida, which is one of the largest retirement communities in America.
Naturally then, I was curious to know how Memorial Day weekend travel searches would compare just a few weeks later. And yet again I was surprised. That’s because only two destinations from our spring travel trends post was among the top-ten destinations for Memorial Day weekend travel. Those two destinations were Panama City Beach, Florida and Gulf Shores, Alabama.
However, as you’d expect, many of the top-ten destinations for Memorial Day weekend travel were beach destinations. The num. one destination, Ocean City, Maryland. Many of the other top-ten Memorial Day travel destinations are places you may expect, such as Miami and Myrtle Beach, which are generally two of the top spring and summer destinations.
I was particularly glad to see the Outer Banks rounding out the top-ten list. Growing up in North Carolina, I spent many summers on the Outer Banks, which I consider one of the best beach destinations in America. While many of the beach destinations on HomeAway’s top-ten list are bustling beach cities come summertime, the Outer Banks offer a more laid-back feel.
However, the list did include some cities beyond just beach destinations, including Orlando. That can in part be credited to Walt Disney World, but also the convenience of Orlando to many of Florida’s beaches, since it’s about the same distance to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. However, be aware that Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest weekends at Disney. Nonetheless, if you want a theme park experience, HomeAway has one of those with the Sweet Escape, which is part vacation rental and part theme park. Yes, really.
Last, but not least, was Las Vegas, which was the only other city on the list that wasn’t located on the beach. The upside to Las Vegas for Memorial Day Weekend is that it’s some of the best weather of the year, before the hot mid-summer temperatures arrive. While Las Vegas is a busy weekend on the Strip, HomeAway’s Las Vegas vacation rentals offer a break from the hustle and bustle. Additionally, you often get more space and privacy for less than the price of a standard hotel room on the Strip. And in some cases, you get your own spa and pool, such as this HomeAway rental off the Vegas Strip.
