Level Up Games 2018: Back and Better Than Ever

It’s that time of year again, where everyone breaks out their fresh ping pong paddles and finest red Solo cups for the Level Up Games. Our favorite event came early this year, but Team HomeAway was prepared and ready to take on the competition.

We have so many enthusiastic and skilled employees we hold internal tryouts a few weeks prior to the Level Up Games to determine who will represent HomeAway in the official competition. Ping pong, flip cup, Mario Kart, Liar’s Dice, and dodgeball make up the schedule among a few other events.

Product Support Specialist, Bradley Spears, competed in Mario Kart for the second time. Bradley said, “Last year was my first year, so I was a bit more starstruck. This year seemed way more relaxed, I even dressed up as Mario to compete in the games with my teammate, who was Luigi! The competition was stiffer this year, but it was also way louder and more fun, with lively people and even more dancing when the music was playing. I enjoyed myself a lot.”

When the big day finally arrived, we saw many familiar faces from companies like Spredfast, RetailMeNot, and Arrive Logistics. Even though they are our competitors for the day, we still love getting to know each other over drinks and food truck snacks.

Halfway through our events, we were a little unsure about where we stood in the lineup because the competition was so fierce. We buckled down and finished our remaining events, giving it our all. It paid off because we won gold in foosball, ping pong and the executive bonus game (a hula hoop/dodgeball mashup), silver in flip cup, and bronze in the mystery event.

The mystery event was pretty complex and messy. One participant had to assemble five pizza boxes and walk across a sea of legos while barefoot. Next, four teammates were blindfolded and one person coached them as they tackled an inflatable football player. Lastly, two teammates had to shove soaking wet sponges into a football helmet then place the helmets on their heads in an effort to fill up a Solo cup.  Since we made the top four, we got to move on to the final challenge. It involved using marshmallow fluff and corn flakes to craft the largest “fluff” football.

We placed second overall and raised $10,000 for Service Dogs Inc., a non-profit that transforms shelter dogs into service animals for people living with hearing loss or mobility challenges. A volunteer from Service Dogs Inc. even brought two dogs in training to show their support!

Sr. Internal Communications Manager, Jaime Moreno, has been with HomeAway for ten years and the Level Up Games has quickly become one of her favorite events.

Jaime said, “I’m super proud of how our team performed in the 2018 Games. While we took home the silver for the second year in a row, for us, it’s about the camaraderie. We all decided we came in first in the category of having fun!”

We’ll be mentally and physically preparing all year, so watch out Spredfast, we’re going for gold in 2019!
